Professor Han Do-hyun (AKS)

Professor Han Do-hyun is offereing two classes this semester.

This ia a course related website for   International Seminar in Korean Society in English.

Professor Han is professor of sociology at AKS. He received his Ph.D. in sociology from Seoul National University in 1992. He was a Stanley Junior Fellow (1994) and Oberman Fellow (2004) at the University of Iowa and a visiting scholar at Harvard University (1995, 2001, and 2006), member of the Advisory
Committee for the Promotion of Humanities in the Ministry of Education and Human Resources. His major publications include: Corporate Citizenship and Civic; Religion and Civic Community; Voluntary Local Assocatiation and Civic; Grassroots Leaders and Civic Community; Advancing the Rule of Law in; An Alternative Model against the Fordist Food System: A Social. His research interests include community empowerment, environmental sociology, social history, and the comparative study of Korea and Vietnam.

Korean Web Sites Suffer DDoS Attack

Malicious computer codes attacked the Web sites of South Korea's presidential office and other major institutions on March 4, shutting down some of them temporarily, The presidential office Cheong Wa Dae, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and top lender Kookmin Bank were among 29 institutions whose Web sites were hit by the so-called distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack that started from 10 a.m., AhnLab Inc., South Korea's top computer security company said in a statement.

South Korea raised the cyber alert level following the DDoS attack, which disables access to servers and harms PC's hard drives.

KASAMMAKO

KASAMMAKO stands for The Unity of Filipino Migrant Workers Associations in Korea.

This organization is one of the most organized migrants' related network that connects not just the migrant workers but it provides a platform to other organizations in the form of an alliance. The KASAMMAKO was established out of the struggle and determination of Filipino migrants to defend their rights. Subsequently, KASAMMAKO was formed after the member organizations of the coordinating body decided to formalize the coordination body. During the Coordinating body's assessment and consultation the same year, the need for a united alliance of overseas Filipino organizations in Korea resulted in the Coordinating Body transformation into KASAMMAKO. Power of the Judiciary in Korea

A court suspended Wednesday an execution of the Immigration Office ordering the departure of Michel Catuira, chairperson of the Seoul-Gyeonggi-Incheon Migrants’ Trade Union (MTU) in South Korea.

All this started when Michel's who is a migrant worker(authorized) raised voice on issues related to the migrant workers irrespective of their status, nationality or gender. He carried out hunger strikes and gave a voice to the MTU - that it desperately need. It is imortant to note that the Korean  government does not recognized the MTU as a legitimate trade union. Since its inception in 2005,  MTU leaders have been targeted and have faced surveillance, harassment and deportation.

Amendment of the Act on Employment of Foreign Workers, etc

Amendment of the Act on Employment of Foreign Workers, etc Q & A October 2009 etc was passed at the National Assembly on September 16 was promulgated on October 9.Bill for the amendment of the Act on Employment of Foreign Workers,th 2009 andth 2009. after the date of promulgation. However, provisions on the reemployment(Article 18-2) and the changing of workplace (Article 25) shall enter into force on Dec. 10. The Amended Act is to enter into force on April 10th, 2010, six monthsth, 2009.  to Q&As contained hereinafter are focused on certain areas. ENFORCEMENT DATE OF THE AMENDED ACT
Addenda
Article 1 (Enforcement Date)
This Act shall enter into force six months after its promulgation. However, revised provisions of Article 18-2 and Article 25 shall enter into force two months after the promulgation.

Article 3 (Application of Special Cases for the Restriction on Employment Period)
The revised provision of Article 18-2 shall apply from when the employer applies for the reemployment of the foreign worker who has been employed under the previous provision of Article 18 (1) at the time of entry into force of this Act and his/her expiration of three year employment period draws after the entry of force of this Act.

Article 5 (Transitional Measure for Labor Contract Period)
In case the employer who had signed a labor contract pursuant to the previous

Article 9 (3)
at the time of entry into force of this Act signs or renews the contract pursuant to the revised Article 9 (3) after the entry into force of this Act, he/she can sign or renew a contract for a period in which the total labor contract term pursuant to the previous Article 9 (3) is subtracted from three years.

Article 6 (Transitional Measure for Fine and Fine for Negligence)
The previous provisions for fines and fines for negligence shall apply to actions subject to fines and fines for negligence that took place before the entry into force of this Act.
